When Dr. Nikom Koyu left for AIIMS New Delhi five years ago, he made a promise to return and serve his home state. This month, he kept that promise, joining Arunachal Renal Foundation as Director of Patient Services.
Dr. Koyu completed his DM in Nephrology from AIIMS, one of only about 50 nephrologists in the entire Northeast region. He underwent extensive training in kidney transplantation, dialysis management, and preventive nephrology.
"Arunachal Pradesh has one of the highest rates of kidney disease in the country, yet we have no nephrologists in the state. I wanted to change that," said Dr. Koyu.
His expertise will be instrumental in establishing kidney transplantation services in the state, which currently requires patients to travel to major cities. Dr. Koyu will also lead ARF training programs for nurses and technicians in dialysis care.
